Obituary for Donald J. Leet Donald J. Leet
Longtime Covington Police Chief Dies At Age 87

Mr. Donald J. Leet, age 87, of Covington, Virginia, died Saturday, September 19, 2015, at his residence.

He was the husband of Frances Voliva Leet.

Mr. Leet was born December 12, 1927 in South Norfolk, the son of the late DeWitt Talmadge Leet and Lake Boyd Leet.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1946 until 1948.

Donald was an officer for the South Norfolk Police Department from 1951 until 1956 when he became that department's acting Chief of Police. In 1958, Mr. Leet relocated to this area and became the Chief of Police for the City of Covington, a position he held until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served his church as a member of the board and as an usher.

Donald was a life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He was also involved in the Covington Kiwanis Club, the Covington Civitan Club, the Covington Jaycees and the American Legion.

He was an avid fisherman, softball player, baseball umpire and football official as well as a handy man and woodworker.

In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, Frances Voliva Leet, Mr. Leet is survived by a son, Tracey DeWitt Leet and wife, Sandra of Roanoke; three grandsons, Jordan Leet of Roanoke, Ryan Leet of Denver, CO, and Zachary Leet of Roanoke; three sisters, Dorothy Pierce of Virginia Beach, Frances Shortridge of Chesapeake and Reta Reid and husband, Mike of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Elinor Jones of Martinsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, DeWitt Talmadge and Lake Boyd Leet, Mr. Leet was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Sawyer.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Russell Urban officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426 or Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
