Alleghany County Native Loved Travel, Family

Shirley Nell Chapman Sanders, 81, of Parklin Terrace Apartments, Covington, Virginia, died January 17, 2016 at her residence.

Mrs. Sanders was born February 16, 1934, in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Mansfield Chapman and Nannie Tingler Chapman Blankenship.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Sanders in 2009; three brothers, Charles Chapman, Henry Chapman, and Warren Chapman; one infant sister, Carrie Lee Chapman; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Chapman.

Shirley enjoyed the many years she traveled around the world raising her family in the military. She loved crafting, vacationing at the beach, and most of all being with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Reynolds and husband, William "Mutt" and Leesa Dudley and husband, Eddie; one son, Michael Sanders and wife, Tiffany all of Covington; two granddaughters, Ashley Reynolds and Christy Nicely (Cory Sparks), both of Covington; one grandson Derek Reynolds (Jason Dove) of Blacksburg, one great grandson, Cooper Nicely of Covington, one brother, James Chapman of Clifton Forge, two sisters-in-law, Vickie Chapman of Newport News and Jo Chapman of Covington; a caregiver, Twila Boyd of Iron Gate, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday January 20, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. in the Lone Star Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Sanders' name to the Mt. Regional Hospice at P. O. Box 637; Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
