Obituary for Janet DeLozier Nelson Janet DeLozier Nelson
Covington Resident Was Well-Known Local Educator, Former Supervisor

Mrs. Janet DeLozier Nelson, age 72, of Covington, Virginia, died Monday, March 7, 2016, at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

She was the wife of James Dennis Nelson.

Mrs. Nelson was born May 24, 1943 in Altoona, PA, the daughter of the late John Charles DeLozier and Stella Cochran DeLozier.

Janet graduated from Columbia Union College in Tacoma Park, MD with a Bachelors Degree in Education. During her working career, Mrs. Nelson was employed as an educator in the Alleghany County and Covington school systems and was Education Program Director at Boys Home.

An active member of the community since 1965, she was involved in numerous committees including the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors, the Economic Development Commission, the Alleghany Highland Arts and Crafts Center and the Social Services Board. Janet also served on the board of the Fifth District Planning Commission, the C.P. Jones Memorial Library and the Covington-Hot Springs Airport Commission. She was also a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, James Dennis Nelson, Mrs. Nelson is survived by one son, Matthew Donald Nelson and wife, Melissa Ann Burch Nelson of Midlothian; two grandchildren, Donald Maxwell Nelson and Jack Marshall Nelson; her mother-in-law, Jean Fitzpatrick Nelson of Hollidaysburg, PA; her sister-in-law, Donna N. Hyde of Aliso Viejo, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, John Charles and Stella Cochran DeLozier, Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by five siblings, Olive Mae Low, Joseph Theodore DeLozier, June Gertrude Bender, John Charles DeLozier and Linda Jane Boyer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Russ Urban officiating.

The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. until service time at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 noon Saturday, March 12, 2016 in Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona PA.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426, the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library, 406 W. Riverside Street, Covington, VA 24426, or the Alleghany Highland Arts and Crafts Center, P. O. Box 273, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
