Korean War Navy Veteran Was Longtime Local Insurance Agent

Carrol Eugene (Gene) Humphries, 86, of 5305 Rich Patch Road, Covington, Virginia died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at his residence.

He was born May 15, 1930 in Rich Patch in Alleghany County, a son of the late Albert L. and Elsie Bush Humphries.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eilene Andrews.

Gene served his country during the Korean War with the United States Navy. He was awarded the China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (4 Stars), The United Sates Nations Service Medal and the 50 year Service Medal. He served on the USS Perkins ship.

He was a life member of Mountain Valley United Methodist Church in Rich Patch. Also he served as scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America for number years.

He was an insurance agent in the Highlands area for over 25 years.

Surviving are his long-time companion, Susie Plasters of Covington, three sons, Michael Allen Humphries and Mark Lewis Humphries and his wife, Bonnie of Covington, John Edward Humphries and his wife, Leslie of Kingsport TN; six grandchildren; one sister, Leona Conner of Covington; also surviving a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Kathy McCoy and husband, Robert of Covington.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev Bill Gilliland officiating assisted by Rev H. Ray Tucker.

Interment will be made in the Humphries Cemetery in Rich Patch.

Active pallbearers will be Ray Plasters III, Ronnie Bennett, Robert McCoy, Mike Carter, Teddy Humphries,Jr. and Brian Humphries. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond “Jim” Tucker, John Craft, Jr., Everett Bush, Berkley Mays and David Jackson. The family will receive their friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial donation in Mr. Humphries may be made to Boys Home, 414 Boys Home, Covington, VA 24426 or to the Mountain Valley United Methodist Church in care of Brenda Napier, 5316 Hayes Gap Road, Covington, VA 24426.
