Mr. Herbert Lanier Simmons, Jr., age 48, of Covington, Virginia died Thursday, December 15, 2016, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor.

He was the husband of Charity Michelle Simmons.

Mr. Simmons was born August 12, 1968 in Covington, the son of Leona Yvonne Meadows Simmons and the late Herbert Lanier Simmons, Sr.

A lifetime resident of this community, he was a graduate of Covington High School.

Herbert had been employed by the Department of Corrections before working as a deputy with the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office, where he retired with twenty years of service.

Mr. Simmons was a firearms instructor for the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office and was a member of the Alleghany Gun Club. Herbert was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Mr. Simmons was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother and his wife, Mr. Simmons is survived by a son, Casey Brian Simmons; a daughter, Sierra Cheyenne Brown of Covington; a special son, Andrew Lee Cole; a brother, Michael Brian Simmons and wife, Heather of Covington; a number of nieces and nephews, friends and family at the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office; his cats, Rascal, Smokey, Lucky, and Garfield; and his dogs, Hercules and Apollo.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Hartsfield officiating.
