Obituary for Winfred Basil McElwee Winfred Basil McElwee
U. S. Navy World War II Veteran Was Retired Homestead Carpenter

Winfred Basil McElwee, 92, of 2907 Sam Snead Highway in Hot Springs, Virginia died Sunday, December 25, 2016, at the Woodlands Nursing Home in Clifton Forge.

Mr. McElwee was born May 16, 1924 in Hot Springs, a son of the late Ollie and Lora Bell Perry McElwee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Monna Burns McElwee in 2005, and also by two brothers, Gratton McElwee and Welford McElwee, and four sisters, Sadie Lee Burns, Emma Lois Burns, Mildred Lowry and Maxine Shinault.

He was a veteran of World War II with the U. S. Navy.

He retired as a carpenter after years at The Homestead in Hot Springs.

He was a longtime member of the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church and the Hot Springs Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Jean McElwee of Hot Springs; his grandson, Scott McElwee and his wife, Carmen of Branson, Missouri; his great granddaughter, Xia Scout McElwee of Branson, Missouri, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the graveside in Union Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Donald Altizer officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home in Covington.

The family suggests that donations in Mr. McElwee's name be made to the Hot Springs Rescue Squad at P. O. Box N, Hot Springs, VA 24445.
