U. S. Navy World War II Veteran Dies At Age 92

Mr. Elmo McCurdy Smith, Jr., age 92, of Covington, Virginia died Sunday, January 15, 2017 at his residence.

He was the husband of Barbara Jean Jones Smith.

Mr. Smith was born March 5, 1924 in Clifton Forge, the son of the late Elmo McCurdy Smith, Sr. and Eliza Caty Kerr Smith.

A lifetime resident of this community, he was a graduate of Covington High School.

Elmo served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II.

Mr. Smith was employed by Westvaco where he worked in the Research and Development Department, retiring in 1987.

Elmo was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife of fifty-nine years, Barbara, Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Preston Kerr Smith and wife, Sherry Burnett of Troy and Wayne Neal Smith of Covington; one daughter, Laura Smith Sadler and husband, Thomas of Danville; four grandchildren, Sara Caitlan Booze and husband, Craig, Olivia Paige Smith, Haley Danielle Smith and Sheridan Paige Smith.

In addition to his parents, Elmo and Eliza Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Ann Smith of Covington.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Alleghany Memorial Park with Rev. James C. Slate officiating.

A reception following the service will be held at First Presbyterian Church. The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
