Covington Native Worked With Industrial Rayon Corp., Covington High School

Marilyn Anderson Wood, 89, of Covington, Virginia died Friday, December 30, 2016.

Marilyn was born in Covington on October 18, 1927, the daughter of the late Phillip E. and Nara K. Anderson.

She was a graduate of Covington High School and attended Mary Washington College.

Marilyn was the wife of the late Gratten B. Wood Jr., who passed away on July 14, 1992.

Marilyn worked as an accounting clerk with the Industrial Rayon Corporation initially, however the majority of her career was spent in education with the Covington School system through her retirement in 1992.

Marilyn began as a substitute teacher in 1969 and eventually became the study hall supervisor at Covington High School, where she was known by her students as the "Silver Bullet."

In addition to her parents and husband, Marilyn was predeceased by her brother, William E. Anderson, and a close friend, Paul F. Nichols.

Marilyn is survived by a sister-in-law, Eleanor L. Anderson, and leaves behind a family of several dear friends and her beloved cat, Runt.

A entombment service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the lower mausoleum at Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that any memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Alleghany Humane Society, Inc., 9313 Rich Patch Road, Covington, Va. 24426.

Arrangements were handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Va.
