Obituary for Carol (Jane) Locher Carol (Jane) Locher
England Native Had Long Nursing Career In Rockbridge County

Carol (Jane) Locher, 78, of Buena Vista, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

She is survived by her children, George (Jillian), John (Jody), Michael (Jan) and Susan (Darryl); and by her brother, Richard Louis (Rhonda); sister, Sara Grinnell (Terry); as well as 9 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, all of whom meant so much to her and came to know her as "Nannie."

Born in Bath, England in 1939, Jane immigrated to the United States when she was 16 along with Richard and Sara. Upon arrival, they all settled in Rockbridge County living with their father at the home of his close friend, Don Clayton, his wife, Catherine and their children.

Following her graduation from Natural Bridge High School, Jane started her family and was blessed with three sons and a daughter. As life changes occurred, Jane embarked upon a career in nursing that would speak volumes about her determination and sincere care for others.

Following three years of studies at Dabney Lancaster College, Jane received her Nursing degree in 1973. Jane began her nursing career at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, working in the ER and OB departments. She loved being with the mothers and babies.

Jane relocated to Buena Vista and began a very rewarding, 33-year career with Buena Vista Medical Associates, where she met and became endeared to so many people in this small community including doctors, co-workers and "her" patients, as she used to call them.

Following her retirement from BVMA, she answered the call for part-time nursing help in Glasgow at the Maury River Family Practice until her full retirement a few years later.

Jane loved family and friends alike. Her unwavering commitment and love for her English ancestry, her patients, her friends, her quilting community and most importantly her family were the seeds of love and happiness which grew and flourished in her and around her.

Visitation with family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday May 26, 2017 at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home located in Buena Vista, Virginia.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Glasgow, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice.
