World War II Army Veteran, Was MeadWestvaco Retiree, Lone Star Baptist Church Member

Wardie Odell Brookman, 93, of 4409 Potts Creek Road, Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, June 8, 2017 at his residence.

He was born December 30, 1923 in Craig County, a son of the late Arthur and Effie Lee Wolfe Brookman.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brookman was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Campbell Brookman on March 30, 2017; two sons, Ronnie O. Brookman and an infant son; a son-in-law, Paul Thurston, Sr.; a grandson Paul Thurston, Jr.; six brothers Alvis (Lo) Brookman, Melvin Brookman, Charlie Brookman, Walter Brookman, Lewis Brookman, and Earson Brookman and three sisters, Mary Campbell, Annie Bowen, Lillian Brookman.

Mr. Brookman served his country during World War II with the United States Army.

He retired from the Recovery Department at MeadWestvaco after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church; was a life member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars; and was a member of Meadwestvaco Retirees and the Virginia Farm Bureau.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Thurston of Eagle Rock and Janice Rose and her husband, Russelle of Covington; three grandchildren, Janelle Caldwell and her husband, Steve; David Rose and his wife, Connie and Andrew Thurston and his wife, Brittany; four great grandchildren, Ashley Rose, Brandon Caldwell, Emma Thurston and Cullen Thurston; one sister, Thelma deCheubel of Columbia, MD, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Monday June 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. David Brown assisted by Rev. Donald Earwood.

Interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive their friends Sunday June 11, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home and at other times at Mr. Brookman's residence.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Brookman's name to the Lone Star Baptist Church Building Fund, 6115 Potts Creek Road, Covington, VA 24426.
