Irvine Thomas (Tommy) Baker, 84, of Lexington, Virginia, completed his life journey on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

He was born in Kansas City, Kansas on March 20, 1933 to Irvine Charles and Phyllis Thomas Baker.

He was predeceased by his two siblings, Phyllis (Sissy) Baker Sprott and Paul Charles Baker.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Courtney Price Baker; his adoring daughter, Kimberly Baker Glenn (Charles); two devoted sons, Don Scott Baker (Leanne) and John Thomas Baker (Joan); and doting grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Charles Glenn, Garrard Glenn and Sarah Courtney Glenn Oklesson (Stephen), Sidney Blair Baker, Zachary Baker, Ian Baker, Marilyn Jordan and Patrick Jordan.

Rarely would you see Tommy without Courtney (other than on the golf course).They enjoyed life together immensely. Tommy was a proud alumnus of Washington and Lee University, where he made life-long friends.

He had an entrepreneurial spirit that led him to own a clothing store in Lexington soon after he graduated from college in 1955. Thomas, Ltd. sold tasteful men's and women's clothing and he continued in the business until students began to prefer jeans to khakis. Tommy proudly refused to ever own a pair.

In later years he was a real estate broker and ended his career by leaving his business in the capable hands of his son, Scott.

Tommy was an avid golfer who loved few things more than sharing golf stories with his many friends and buying new sets of clubs, always hoping to perfect his putting. He got pretty close.

Tommy's infectious laugh, keen sense of humor and engaging personality regularly entertained his wife, family and friends. Family gatherings were especially humorous with Tommy, who loved having lots of family around and telling stories.

He was a faithful member of Lexington Presbyterian Church and served in various leadership capacities there.

A memorial service for Tommy will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 3 p.m. after which the family will host a celebration of his life at their home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Lexington Presbyterian Church or to Washington and Lee University Department of Athletics.
