Well-Known Artist Dies At Age 70

Bernard Thomas (Tommy) Smoot, Jr., age 70, of 1725 Main Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Alleghany Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clifton Forge.

He was born October 6, 1947 in Hampton-Newport News, a son of the late Bernard T. Smoot, Sr. and Rose Marie Avant Smoot.

He served in the United States Army and was a Clifton Forge artist, well-known in the area for his rendering of the Clifton Forge rail yard displayed in Dairy Queen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother.

He is survived by his sons, Bernard Thomas Smoot III, Mark Smoot, Byron Mills, and Thomas Smoot Sutphin; two sisters, Tracy Smoot Angus and Cheryl Kay Smoot; and a number of nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

No services are planned at this time.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, is handling arrangements.
