Obituary for Frances Elizabeth Porter Frances Elizabeth Porter
Longtime Educator Was Avid Gardener

Frances Elizabeth Porter was born on April 6, 1920 to the late AlgieLee Porter and Ruth Regina Mitchell of South Boston, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband as well as her aunt, Mary Mitchell Woods of Lexington.

Frances began her education in the public schools of West Virginia. In 1937 she graduated from Simmons High School in Lafayette County. She continued her education at West Virginia State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education (1942) and a Bachelor of Arts in Education (1949).

Frances taught in the West Virginia public schools and after retiring, she moved to Lexington, where she became involved in the Rockbridge Garden Club, sharing her green thumb and love for flowers and gardening. She was an active member of the garden club for more than 40 years, where she also served in leadership capacities. She participated in projects that included area cleanup at Evergreen Cemetery and Jordan's Point as well as numerous statewide competitions for flower arranging, etc.

Until her health began to decline, Frances was an active member of the Buena Vista-Lexington community, where she believed in preserving and contributing to its beautification in any way that she could.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 11 a.m.

Services are being provided by Harrison Funeral Home of Lexington.
