Clifton Forge Native Was Well-Known Soloist

Debra Kay Godfrey Cooper, age 56, of 3533 Ferncliff Avenue NW, Apt K127, Roanoke, Virginia died Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Friendship Health and Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke.

She was born April 7, 1962 in Clifton Forge to the late Virginia Ellen Godfrey Sandidge. She was later raised by the late Justice C. Sandidge, Sr. and Pearlie Godfrey Sandidge.x

She attended South Eastern Airline Academy and worked at the former Woodrum Field Airport in Roanoke.

She attended Jackson Memorial Church of God in Christ, Iron Gate, and performed as a soloist in many churches throughout Virginia and West Virginia.

She is survived by two daughters, Ashley Nicole Cooper and significant other, Florian Earl Ortiz, and Heather Lynn Phelps and husband, Trevon, all of Roanoke; four brothers, Allen Brandon Godfrey and wife, Lisa of Chesterfield, Justice Connie Sandidge, Jr. and wife, Deneen of Fincastle, Jeffrey Darnell Sandidge of Roanoke, and Michael Wayne Godfrey and wife, Lori of Maryland; seven sisters, Wanda Faye Smothers of Covington, Virginia Ann Bannister of Roanoke, Robin Lynn Sandidge of Roanoke, Tammie Renee Sandidge of Roanoke, Bernice Elizabeth Sandidge of Cloverdale, Pearlie Earsiel Sandidge of Roanoke, and Cathy Marie Reynolds and husband, Aaron of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Ri'yahn Jinae Cooper; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special aunt, Kathleen Bernice Robinson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Iron Gate Advent Christian Church, Iron Gate, with Superintendent George W. Bond, eulogist. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church.
