Former Women's Army Corps Member Dies At Age 83

Barbara Ann Griffith Long, 83, one of God's Angels was called home on her birthday May 23, 2018 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.

Barbara was born May 23, 1935 in Covington, Virginia, the daughter of the late Sheila Cary and Virginia James Paxton Griffith.

She was a member of the Women's Army Corps from 1954 to 1955. She was a proud American. Barbara worked at the Greenbrier Hotel, waitressing for 42 ½ years. She never knew a stranger. She was a survivor of the 2016 flood, but it took a toll on her beautiful heart.

Preceding her in death other than her parents was her husband, Albert Leroy Long; seven brothers, Clarence, Sheila "Jr.", John "Jack" Ernest, Larry and James, all Griffiths, four sisters, Catherine Smith, Mary Tucker, Ella Mae Howell and Alwilda Gilmore, and a "special" nephew, Avery Wayne Simmons.

She will be sadly missed by her sons Richard "Buster" Long and wife Tammy, and David Long; daughters, Pat McCoy and Tana Unroe, along with eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday May 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Whatcoat United Methodist Church with Pastors James "Jimmy" Long and Ed Craft officiating, interment will follow at the Allegheny Burial Park at Low Moor, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Church on Monday May 28, 2018.
