Michigan Native Was Rockbridge County Resident

Annette Louise Church John died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 while attending a noontime concert at the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

Annette was born on June 24, 1938 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, daughter of the late Carolyn and Donald Church.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Lewis George John, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons: Andrew and his wife, Amy of Baltimore, Md., and their children, Kathryn and Michael; and Christopher and his wife, Jill of New Hope, Pa., and their children, Jordan Flynn, Alexander and Kendall; sisters, Carolyn, Linda and Kathryn and their families also survive her.

Annette received her bachelor of arts in English from Oberlin College in 1960, and a masters of library science degree from the Syracuse University School of Information Science in 1967. She was employed at the Washington and Lee University Library as acquisitions librarian from September 1968 until her retirement in July 2000.

Throughout her retirement, she was an active volunteer at the Rockbridge Regional Library, and was a member of the Lexington Garden Club, Lexington Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Rockbridge Regional Library, Ignorance Club, and English Speaking Union.

Annette and Lewis became residents of Kendal at Lexington in June 2015. Annette was a very active member of the community, noted for her energy and ability to organize, along with her willingness to take on projects and see them through. She had many interests, which she enthusiastically shared with others. She is remembered especially for her love of gardening and travel.

A memorial service will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 3 p.m., followed by a celebration of her life at Kendal at Lexington.

The Washington and Lee undergraduate Class of 1958 established the Class of 1958 Lew and Annette John Honor Scholarship to provide scholarship support for eligible undergraduate students. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to this fund in memory of Annette John may be mailed to: Washington and Lee University, University Development, 204 W. Washington St., Lexington VA 24450.
