Obituary for James Haley Armstrong James Haley Armstrong
World War II Veteran Had 38-Year Local Banking Career

James Haley Armstrong of Clifton Forge, Virginia left his earthly home on March 17, 2019 at 92 years of age.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael W. Armstrong; parents, Cornelia Hayslett Armstrong and Homer Armstrong; sisters, Kathleen Armstrong and Marguerite Armstrong Neal, and a brother, Larue Armstrong.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jeanine Morris Armstrong; daughter, Terry Armstrong of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and Anthony Fitzgerald, also of Roanoke, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jimmy, as called by friends, was born and raised in Clifton Forge. He was a 1944 graduate of Clifton Forge High School. He worked for Peerless Creamery, then was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army before settling in to a 38-year career in banking in Clifton Forge.

He was active in several churches during his lifetime, raising his children in the First Christian Church and in later years, attending Iron Gate Baptist Church.

Upon retirement in 1988, Jimmy could be found outside during the warm weather playing tennis or working in the yard. Even in later years, riding the lawn mower was a favorite thing to do. The annual family trip to Myrtle Beach was another one of his favorites that he was able to do through 2017.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Mr. Chris Fisher officiating.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Iron Gate Baptist Church Building Fund, 716 Market Street, Iron Gate, VA 24448.
