Obituary for Hattie Marie Cook Thompson Hattie Marie Cook Thompson
Former Covington Resident Dies In Hot Springs

Hattie Marie Cook Thompson, 78, previously of Dunlap Creek Road (Covington, Virginia) passed away April 4, 2019 at The Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, following an extended illness which she fought long, hard, and bravely.

She was born December 28, 1940 in Summers County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Jack and Fannie Doyle Cook.

In addition to her parents, Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby, a son, Jackie, and two brothers, Buck and Pete.

Hattie was a homemaker and enjoyed her flower beds and house plants, vegetable and fruit gardening, canning, cooking and crafting.

In addition to her love of Christ and serving in her church prior to her illness, Hattie will be remembered best for her cooking abilities, making sure everyone had enough even when she may have lacked much herself, and never losing her faith during her health issues.

Surviving are four of her children and their families: her sons, Eddie Thompson of Eastover, SC, Timmy Thompson and wife, Angie of Covington, and Alvin Thompson and Angie Shumaker of Covington; her daughter, Melissa Humphries and her fiance, Larry Basham of Nimitz, WV, whom she dearly loved as a son. She adored her seven grandchildren: Anthony Thompson, Makala Humphries, Ariel Thompson, Walker Humphries, Faith Thompson, Destiny Thompson and Andrew Thompson as well as Alayna Shumaker. Surviving siblings include one brother, John Cook and wife, Glenna of Marie, WV; one sister, Frances "Frankie" Wills of Fincastle; her sisters-in-law, Zenith Cook of Hinton, WV, and Novella Cook of Lebanon, TN.

In addition to sisters and brothers-in-law on Bobby's side of the family, she was blessed with many nieces and nephews, who were also dearly loved. A dear friend over the past few years Alice H., her walking partner, Frances Thompson, and members of Moss Run Baptist Church were all special friends to her.

The family would like to thank her extended family at The Springs Nursing Center for providing care and comfort, but most importantly love to Hattie following her admittance. Also, thank you to her Homecare Angels from Alleghany Highlands Homecare, including Tiffany and Gail.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Sizemore officiating.

Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park. The family will receive their friends Saturday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Arritt Funeral Home. The family suggests that donations in Mrs. Thompson’s name be made to the Moss Run Baptist Church; 105 Moss Run Road; Covington, VA 24426 or to the Alzheimer’s Association; P.O.Box 96011; Washington, DC 20090-6011 or Parkinson’s Foundation.
