World War II Veteran Was Former Hercules, Inc. Employee

Mr. Willard Stanley (Pete) Griffith, Jr. , age 92, of Covington, Virginia died Thursday, May 2, 2019 at LewisGale Medical Center, Salem.

He was the husband of Helen Ray Powers Griffith to whom he was married for seventy-two years.

Mr. Griffith was born September 5, 1926 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Willard Stanley Griffith and Grace Hylton Griffith.

He retired from the former Hercules, Inc., where he was a second floor operator in the Spinning Dept.

Pete was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the United States Navy and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

He was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Griffith was a forty-eight year member of Trinity Baptist Church and presently a member of Covington Baptist Church, where he served his church in any capacity that he could.

Pete attended Dunlap High School, loved to work outdoors and was an avid hunter.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Griffith is survived by one son, Larry Griffith of Covington; a granddaughter, Amanda Ayers and husband, Lee; two great grandchildren, Reagan Ayers and Riley Ayers; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Griffith was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Griffith and Harold Griffith and one grandson, Patrick Griffith.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Covington Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Armes officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the church.
