Former Buena Vista Educator Dies At Age 99

Jane Schurz Mollenhoff passed away on May 11, 2019 at the age of 99.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay D. Cook and Margaretta (Nelson) Cook; her sisters, Sara Collins and Elizabeth Weir; and her two brothers, Jay Cook Jr. and Joseph Cook.

Jane graduated from Moorestown High School in New Jersey in 1937 and continued her education at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, graduating in 1941. She attended Taylor Business School in Philadelphia from 1941 to 1942.

Richard Schurz, a former University of North Carolina student, came home from war service as a navigator for the Army Air Force stationed in the China-India-Burma Theater. He and Jane married in 1944 and settled in Fairport, N.Y., where they raised their four children.

Richard died in 1965 and Jane moved to Lexington and taught elementary school age children for 17 years in the Buena Vista school system. Clark Mollenhoff, a Washington, D.C., investigative journalist and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, was teaching at Washington and Lee University. Jane and Clark became friends. They married in 1981 and spent 10 years traveling and teaching. Clark passed away in 1991. Four years later, Jane moved to Williamsburg Landing, where she was well-cared-for during her remaining years.

Jane subscribed to three newspapers and enjoyed working on the puzzles and reading the editorials. She also played bridge, enjoyed swimming and walking her dogs.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Susan Marcy; her three sons, James Richard and his wife, Patsy, Jay David and his wife, Helen, and Robert Mark and his friend, Barbara; four granddaughters; five grandsons; and 12 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 16. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Hospice organization of your choice. Online condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
