VMI Dining Services Employee Was Gospel Way Church of God in Christ Member

Florine Ruth Cooper Walker was born in Collierstown, Virginia on September 20, 1931 to Agnes Cooper Myers.

She moved to Gala at the age of 10 to live with her aunt and uncle to finish attending elementary school in Eagle Rock.

At the age of 15, she moved to Lexington and attended Lylburn Downing High School. Following graduation she married Charles Henry Walker Jr.

She is preceded in death by her mother, husband, and two sons, Charles "Bumps" and Jackie Sr.

Surviving are three sons, Vernon (Jackie) Walker, of Buena Vista, James Walker of Lexington, and Paul (Gloria) Walker of Toana; three daughters, Gail Walker of Roanoke, Charlene Fitch of Lexington, and Kelly (Thomas) Brown of Lexington; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one special aunt, Ophelia Payne of Lexington; a dear sister-in-law, Lois Green of Lexington; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Florine was employed by Virginia Military Institute Dining Services for 34 years. She had a love for softball, badminton, pinochle, bingo and most of all, her large family. She was a member of Gospel Way Church of God in Christ, Lexington, for 28 years. She served as one of the church mothers, on the hospitality committee and as an usher.

A funeral was held Saturday, December 7.

Arrangements were by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
