Obituary for Sally Martin Gaines Sally Martin Gaines
Professional Librarian Also Had Successful Business Career

Sally Martin Gaines, 82, of Buena Vista, Virginia passed away peacefully at her home on December 14, 2019.

She was born on November 15, 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was predeceased by her parents, Dwight W. and Jeannette N. Martin, as well as younger brother, Dwight Jr.

She is survived by her sister, Jeannette Blaschke (Terrence) of Stanford, Calif. Further, she is survived by her children, Thomas M. Gaines (Melissa) of Rockbridge County, Robin Gaines (James Smallwood) of Lexington, and Steven Gaines (Angela) of Oakley, Calif., and former husband, Jim Gaines of Lexington; seven grandchildren, (Joanna Corey, Seth, and Tristan Smallwood, Katya and Ivy Totty, and Atticus Clarke), and three great-grandchildren, (Naomi, Alora, and Zoey).

She had a full and diverse life. As a young adult she was active in the Civil Rights movement and was a helpful member of the League of Women Voters. She was a professional librarian, with degrees from Vassar College and Columbia University. In later life she owned the antique jewelry store "All That Glitters" and operated the phone service "Answering Lexington". In addition, Sally was an effective volunteer and employee at the Rockbridge Area Relief Association. Among her many accomplishments, her primary joy was being a devoted mother and grandmother.

Sally will be remembered for her generous spirit and unwavering passion for knowledge. Throughout her life she helped countless individuals and families.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life in her honor in the spring, at a time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her name to the Rockbridge Area Relief Association and Food Pantry, 350 Spotswood Drive Lexington, VA 24450.
